Tranquil Setting

Green Cove Springs is a town located in Clay County, FL south of Jacksonville with a population of around 7,000. Located close to the Northeast Florida beaches and a short drive from Jacksonville and St Augustine, this charming town features an out of the city old time hospitality. Favorite activities include surfing, swimming, boating, fishing, and golfing.

Green Cove Springs Florida is located on the banks of the Saint Johns River.
Excellent fishing locations are well within walking distance.

A Little History of Green Cove Springs

The Green Cove Springs area was first developed by George E. Clarke in 1816 when he was provided land, under a Spanish land grant to build a sawmill. Green Cove Springs was established in 1854 as White Sulfur Springs. Renamed in 1866, it became the county seat in 1871.

The rich history of Green Cove Springs is tied to the natural springs and the St. Johns River. Prior to the 1930s, the spring property was owned by J.C. Penney, who turned the property over to the City because of employment problems relating to the spring. Green Cove became a prime tourist attraction, famous for the warm, therapeutic springs. The sulfur springs, or the “boil” as it was called brought wealthy visitors down the St. Johns River by steamboat to vacation at the grand hotels like the Clarendon and Qui-Si-Sana. The visitors drank from the spring believing in its medicinal values. It is said one local physician prescribed the spring water for various chronic ailments of the liver and kidneys. There are those today that still have confidence in the therapeutic value of the springs and can be seen daily drawing water from the spring for consumption.

Green Cove Springs is truly named after natural springs that are located in the area. The round pool in the foreground is a natural spring that continually feeds the public swimming pool. Thus, the pool never needs traditional pool maintenance chemicals.

Clay County Fairgrounds

The front entrance to the Clay County Fairgrounds is approximately three miles from the Inn.

Training Grounds

The entrance to the National Training “Training Grounds” is eight miles from the Inn.

Historic Court House

The 1889 historic Court House has been beautifully restored. It currently houses the Clay County Museum. The Court House has been used as a “movie set” for numerous period Hollywood movies.

Jail Houses

The restored 1894 jail houses the Clay County Historical Society.

Saint Augustine Florida

Saint Augustine Florida is the oldest city in the nation. It is a short (25 miles) drive from the Inn. It features many interesting tourist attractions and pristine beaches.
